Is Steph Curry the Modern Day Michael Jordan?

  1. Steph Curry is a joke. Not one player in the league who's not on his team has any respect for him because he is so immature. He is ruining the game of basketball by attempting to show kids that half court shots and flashy layups are the only way to win, and if you can do these things than you are going to be the best. How can we compare the GOAT with this skinny shooter from Golden State. Obviously he's a good shooter, but he's only had two seasons averaging above 25 points in eight NBA seasons...Jordan had seven seasons averaging 25... Lebron - seven. Even Amare Stoudemire, who has been exiled from the NBA and is now remembered for taking wine baths rather than dunks, averaged 25 points twice in his first eight seasons. So clearly points can't be the comparison...is it rings. Well, Steph has one ring...Jordan has six...Lebron has three. Brian Scalabrine, the White Mamba, has the same amount of rings as Curry, and Scalabrine is a seven-foot ginger. If shooting is the argument of choice, then for a quick comparison to Ray Allen (aka Jesus Shuttlesworth), Curry's career averages of three-point, free-throw, and field-goal percentages, are only a combined 6.9% higher. In fact, Curry's own teammate, Kevin Durnatulla Durant, has a higher career field goal percentage...so why isn't he comparable to Michael Jordan. The only statistical comparison between Curry and Jordan is that the Warriors bested the Bull's season win record last year. Mind you that the Warriors had one additional all-star than the Bull's, proving that Jordan had the majority of the workload (shared only with his sidekick Pippen). The best aspect of Jordan's game was his clutch gene, his ice in his veins. In last years finals, Curry choked and could not close out "the best season ever" with a ring. The Cavs bested the Warriors, and Lebron, on an individual level, bested Curry for the second straight finals. Had Kyrie and Love not gotten injured two years ago, Curry would have no rings. Lebron is the only worthy adversary for the true GOAT, the only player in NBA history to matchup with MJ pound for pound.

  2. I personally do not believe that Curry is a modern-day Jorden for a few reasons. First off, Curry is a precision shooter and set the single season three-point record. Whereas Jorden was a significantly more aggressive player, scoring more free throws than threes because of his ability to drive through traffic. Never the less both athletes have had profound impacts on how the game is played. However, the differences in these two athlete’s strengths and weaknesses is well described in the article section titled “The Next Jorden- Or the First Curry.” The game of basketball has undergone countless shifts in playing style since it was founded. Jorden played in the era of being aggressive and using brawn to win. But Curry is the opposite, he’s not big compared to most other athletes in the NBA but, he uses his profound shooting ability and ball handling skills to dismantle players that have a physical advantage. Therefore, I don’t think Curry is the next Jorden because I think a player like Curry is the answer to a player like Jorden. Where Jorden would rely on his size to fight to the rim, Curry would rely on his ability to drop back and get open. I am not saying one player is definitively better than the other, I simply don’t see any similarities in their playing styles.

  3. I think that it is incredibly difficult to live up to the standards set by Michael Jordan when he played for the Bulls in the 80's and 90's. Because of this, I do not believe Steph Curry is the modern day Michael Jordan whatsoever. Although Curry has made an appearance in the last to NBA finals, I feel as though he was just contributing to an already very talented Golden State Warriors team. Also, the only reason that people are comparing Curry to Jordan is because of their record breaking season last year, getting more wins than ever before. Yes, Curry was a contributor to this record, I think the rest of the team gets overlooked. Michael Jordan was a leader, an icon for all of basketball. Curry, on the other hand, tends to choke in big moments, and does not possess the leadership qualities necessary to even be considered as good as Michael Jordan.

  4. Steph Curry is not the modern day Jordan. There are many players who better represent him than Curry. Michael Jordan was known for his clutch and for his ability to score points. Back when Michael Jordan played, the three pointer wasn't as big as it was today. Games were more driven by two pointers than they were three pointers back then. Jordan still has more points than Curry over 7 seasons, even when he shot more 3s than twos. You can see it in their stats, Curry has a much higher amount of 3s and he still has a lower amount of points. Also, Michael Jordan was known for his clutch. In the 1997 NBA finals, Michael Jordan had a flu during one of the games and he still dropped 38 points. Steph Curry got up 3-1 in the NBA finals and he couldn't even win 1/3 of games. Michael Jordan had two three peats in the NBA finals. He even left the sport of basketball to go play baseball and then came back with almost the same skill level. Steph Curry is not the modern day Jordan. He does not have some of the key aspects that Jordan did, and there are many that represent him better than Curry.

  5. I do not believe Steph Curry is the modern day Michael Jordan whatsoever. Although Curry is one of the best players in the NBA, he is not as good at Jordan. For years, people said that LeBron is as good or better than Jordan. Jordan sets the standard and nobody will be better than him. When Jordan was playing, it was more or less him and Scottie Pipen, while Curry has an all-star team at his disposal, he was just the best on that team. A team getting as many wins as the Warriors did, means that a team is very good, one person can't carry a team like that. Michael Jordan was humble and amazing, while Curry knows he is good and is sucking this year. Jordan just did the job and did it great year after year. The phenomenon of Curry just started a few years ago. Jordan is clutch, Curry isn't. Jordan is a leader, Curry isn't. Jordan was liked by everyone, Curry isn't. Everything that made Jordan the greatest player ever, Curry isn't.

  6. My belief is that Steph Curry is not the modern day Jordan. In my opinion there are plenty of other players that standout way more than Curry. Although Curry has a good amount of shooting 3s he still maintains to have a lower shooting score than Michael Jordan who I believe is better than Curry. Jordan makes it so nobody will ever be better than him due to his style in the game and his performance out on the court. Back when Jordan played, the three pointer was not as big as it is today. The games definitely had more two pointers than there were three pointers even today. To show proof on why I feel Micheal Jordan is better, is back in 1997 NBA finals, Jordan had the flu which did not seem to put him down at all, he ended up having 38 points still keeping his performance strong. On the other hand, Steph Curry got up 3-1 in the NBA finals and could not even pull through on winning 1/3 of the games. Additionally, Micheal Jordan left the sport to go play baseball and then came back with making as many points and still keeping his game on. Curry definitely does not match up to Jordan and there are more athletes out there that I feel represent him way better than Steph Curry.

  7. I don't believe that Steph is the modern day Jordan. Steph has gotten his fame and popularity by turning the game of basketball into a three-point shooting competition in my opinion. Obviously he is a good player; there is no doubt about that, however Jordan had it all. Jordan could dunk, shoot, play far better defense, dribble and often times carry a team whereas Curry has help from many other star players which makes the warriors a deadly team. Curry makes flashy plays and can shoot the three ball like one of the best in the league. Jordan may not have as good a three point shot, or the same range, but he was amazingly well-rounded in almost every area. Curry and Jordan are just too different to compare. I'm not trying to rip on Curry, but I think he is way too overrated. Curry and Jordan are also just known for different things and I don't think Curry is, or should be in the conversation of being the next Jordan. I think other players in the league represent Jordan better.

  8. I am not a big basketball fan. I don't pay much attention to the players and the stats. But I do know that I hear Steph Curry's name just as frequently if not more than LeBron's or Kobe's. I know who Curry is and that he is known for shooting really long three's. I also know that Jordan has been known as the best basketball player of all time. I think to compare the two so closely is a slippery slope. The first difference is the pace of the game and the style they play. The many year difference between the two careers creates a large gap in the styles of play. I also believe that it is fair to compare the two because they could bring different skills and roles to the team. Lining up the stats don't tell the whole story. Curry is a very well known player, especially in this generation and so was Jordan at the time. They are similar in fame and stats, but comparing them is pointless because they are not the same people and it is unclear of how Curry's career will pan out. Overall I think that whether Curry is the new Jordan is subject to opinion, but it should not even be a question on the table. The two players are different and should not be so closely compared.

  9. Steph Curry is not comparable to Michael Jordan. Jordan stampeded through the NBA for 6 straight (playing) years, winning 5 MVPs and probably should have won 9 or 10. Curry has won 2. Yes, the second was unanimous, but it was just one season. Now, Curry is far from the best player. He is neither the best player on his team, easily bested my Kevin Durant, nor the best at his position, clearly overpowered by Westbrook, Harden, as well as Kyrie Irving and possibly Isaiah Thomas or John Wall. Not once during Michael's heyday were people arguing that Clyde Drexler might be the best shooting guard. It was Jordan or no dice. Curry is clearly no match for Michael on the court, but off the court is another story. Steph is highly marketable, being one of the most humble superstars there is. The kids adore him, too. While some argue that his deep-3 shooting and flashy lay-ups might be bad for the game, children love his exciting style of playing. His endorsement potential is as high as we've seen in recent memory, possibly since Jordan. However, it still cannot be compared to Jordan's. His Airness practically jumped start Nike, in terms of its basketball endeavors. He ended up creating Air Jordan, a side-branch of Nike. Curry is nowhere close to MJ on the court or off the court. LeBron might be though.

  10. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the NBA; I don’t think I have watched a whole game through. Despite that I do know Steph Curry and have seen him play before. He has a very recognizable name, and is a good player. With that said I do not believe Steph Curry has matched Jordan. Curry is known for putting up some 3 pointers, but don’t believe they are consistent enough to match the play of Jordan. Jordan’s pace is on another level and his performance out competes anyone else on the court.
I do not believe it is fair to compare these two athletes as they played in two different generations, which within that the game has changed immensely. I would say that when comparing their names and how famous they are they would be pretty close. But comparing them based on their play is unfair as Curry hasn’t even finished his career yet, and Jordan is a legend.

  11. While Curry is definitely one of the best of this generation, he is not the modern day Michael Jordan. He is indeed one of the best in the game today, and has many accomplishments in the game. His name will surely live on as one of the greats. I do not think he is the modern day Michael Jordan mainly because he does not have the same successes as Jordan. Jordan has 6 championship wins, a Rookie of the Year award, and many MVP awards. Curry to this day has two championship wins. In reality, It is much too early to tell if he will live up to Jordan because at 29, Curry still has many years of his NBA career left to come. As of now, there is a lot of hype around him, and many kids admire him, and look up to him just as people did when Jordan was in the game. So in conclusion, while Curry has potential to match the greatness of Michael Jordan, he is not yet a modern day Michael Jordan.

  12. Saying Stephen Curry is the modern-day Michael Jordan is like saying my bracket won our march madness group, it's not true. Michael Jordan is the best to ever play the game of basketball because because he consistently excelled on both offense and defense. Jordan is known for his clutch shots in the NBA playoffs and superb leadership, while Curry is still a nobody in terms of NBA history. Curry may have insane ball handling skills and a shot that cannot be matched, but he still lacks the defensive ability and leadership. Curry is so bad at defense that he is known as a liability on that end of the floor. Jordan was the best at every aspect of the game with respect to blocked shots and rebounding, so how dare someone even put Curry and Jordan in the same sentence. If Curry wants to be known as an all-time great, he must continue to excel on the offensive end and hope he gets a few more rings. If not, I do see how he would end up in the top 50 all-time, not even to mention being in the same class as Jordan. Case closed.

  13. I don't know how you compare Stephen Curry to Michael Jordan. Stephen Curry is without a doubt a good player, but not at Michael j\Jordan's level. Michael Jordan dominated at his time and was way better than everyone else. Stephen curry is comparable to Lebron or Kobe. Once Curry retires he will be mostly forgotten. He just doesn't dominate the sport enough to be comparable to the best of all time.

  14. I do not think that you can even compare Steph Curry to Michael Jordan. There is only one person that you can talk about with Michael Jordan and that is Lebron James and even then it isn't a real debate. Steph Curry isn't even the best player of this generation . Yes, he is one of the best 3 point shooters, but he is not even in the conversation for an all around player. He is revolutionizing the game, but not the way Jordan has. Jordan won all six of his championships, but Steph blew a 3-1 lead.

  15. In my opinion, I believe Steph Curry is not the new Michael Jordan. First, both of their playing styles are different, so to compare them can be difficult. Curry is generally a three point shooter. Jordan was able to make defensive plays and offensive plays. Another reason why Curry is not the modern day Jordan is because Jordan has won more championships. Additionally, Jordan also has more awards and accolades while Curry does not have that many. I also believe other players are better than Curry that are currently in the NBA. I think Lebron James could be compared better to Jordan than Curry. James also has more championships than Curry. Steph Curry is a talented player, but is not as talented as Michael Jordan was.

  16. I believe Steph Curry is not the modern Micheal Jordan for many reasons. One being the amount of championships Micheal has one compared to Steph. Micheal has won 6, while Steph has only won one. This is a huge gap. As well Micheal and Steph live in different generations so it is very hard to compare. As well as Steph has not finished his career yet. Even so Micheal's opponents feared him because of is skills and i feel in this generation Steph's opponents do not fear him. So in all, I do not believe Steph is the the modern day MJ.

  17. I do not believe that steph curry is the modern day michael jordan. Michael jordan was considered a basketball legend throughout his career while Steph Curry might be considered the goat in terms of shooting he will never come close to the level that Michael Jordan was on. I think that although comparably they are different on the court in almost all aspects they do have a couple similarities. First, they are both competitors. Steph clearly is a recipe for winning and Michael Jordan was the same; each player led their teams to the best regular season record for at their respective times. They also have won multiple MVPs proving how they are the best players in the league. A more valid comparison to Michael jordan is either lebron james or kobe bryant. I would say Steph is more of an emotional play similar to reggie miller.

  18. I believe that Steph Curry at this current time should not be compared to Michael Jordan. They played in 2 different time periods; basketball was a lot more physical back then. Steph is a very one dimensional player that is only known for his amazing 3 point ability. Michael Jordan was the guy who could score, defend, and hustle. He could do everything. Jordan has 6 championships and could have gotten maybe 1 or 2 more if he didn't leave for baseball. Steph curry was not even talked about in the MVP race. He's won 5 regular season MVPs and 6 finals MVPs.

  19. I think Michael Jordan will always be better than Steph Curry because Michael Jordan’s game encompasses more than Steph’s. Jordan could handle, shoot, defend, and most importantly could win the big game, being 6/6 in the finals. Steph Curry doesn’t have the killer instinct Jordan did. Jordan never let anyone get the best of him unlike Curry who got dominated by Kyrie Irving in last years NBA Finals. I think it is hard to compare them sometimes because Curry is in the middle of his career still, however, I think jordan was a better overall player.

  20. I do not believe that Steph Curry is the modern Michael Jordan. Both are completely different player as one was a mid-range shooter while the other is a specialist three point shooter. An even bigger thing that separates the two is that Michael Jordan was easily the best in his era. Steph Curry is arguably not the best on his own team with Kevin Durant and Lebron James, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook can be in that conversation as well. The fact that Steph Curry is not an undisputed number one player in the league shows how he should not be considered to Michael Jordan.
