Did Shaq go too far?

Shaquille O'Neal has made a lot of remarks about JaVale McGee on his show. Has O'Neal gone too far with what he's said?

  1. I do not think there is anything wrong with what Shaq has been doing and saying about Javale McGee. For the majority of Shaquille O'neal's professional life, he has been known to be a jokester, from dancing on the court, to starring in several comedies, and now on TNT's inside the NBA with Shaqtin' a Fool. The purpose of the segment is not to harass a player, it is merely to poke fun of some of the comedic actions that occur within the NBA. The point of the segment is to be immature and to show the funny side of sports. If anything, it is immature for Javale McGee to call out Shaq about it. McGee should be focusing on his career and the season, not on a few video clips. While concerns have arisen about the negative light that the show has cast McGee in, it does say something about his basketball IQ that he's been on the show numerous times. There is a reason why the Lebron's and the Kyrie's of the NBA are not displayed on Shaqtin' a Fool, so if McGee is upset about it, he should become a smarter player and not make himself look like an idiot on the court. While I don't believe their Twitter war is appropriate I also think the Warriors organization (including Steve Kerr and KD) are completely overreacting to this scenario. The fact that his coach and all-star teammate got involved in the fiasco further provides evidence that McGee is an immature player and person.

  2. I do believe O’Neal has gone a little too far with his comments on his show. I understand that his show is all about creating humor out of things NBA players do, but I believe that he has completely targeted McGee. This type of joking has not only affected McGee as a player but it has also created conflict over social media which makes the entire NBA league look bad. Like Durant said, there is no ‘perfect’ player in this league and it is not really fair to single one out and make fun of basically all of the things he does. I cannot even imagine how Shaq’s comments are affecting McGee’s self esteem. O’Neil should first of all stop making so many comments on this one player, and secondly should not be so harsh on social media.

  3. Currently, Shaq has a job where he is supposed to entertain people. While he may have gone a bit too far, his show is to entertain people and he did so by making that segment. While he probably shouldn't of and a lot of people have probably lost respect for him going after another player like that. Maybe if he had just done the segment and not decided to start the twitter war it would've been fine. But, by going after him like that just shows that he went too far. Like Steve Kerr said, he had some notions of him that were not true before he met him. After, meeting him he realized that all those things were false and that the comments made were just for going after JaVale McGee. So, by harassing a player as he did with notions that weren't even true, I believe that shaq went too far.

  4. I personally do think that shack should be allowed to make fun of whoever he wants on his show. However, I do not think he handled the situation with JaVale McGee well at all. If someone calls you out for pretty much anything on twitter, just don’t engage them. I’m a big believer in no one has ever won a twitter war. All they do is focus the spotlight on whoever involved and ends up calling more attention to the situation than anyone really wanted in the first place. Also, I don’t think O’Neal should have threated McGee publically it looked like a plea for attention by trying to let everyone know he’s a tough guy. I feel like O’Neal is just trying to attract attention to his show by getting in a fight and pushing himself into the spotlight. Therefore, I do think O’Neal should be allowed to show McGee’s Bloopers on his show, I don’t not think he acted appropriately in the way he handled it.

  5. I do believe that O’Neal went a little too far with his comments. He targeted one person; Mcgee. O’Neal outlined every mistake he did; considering it was in a joking way and this is job it was taken too far. Durant states, "He's come in here and done so much for us as a player. He only wants to be respected, just like anybody else.” McGee is a hard worker and wants respect from everyone as a basketball player. He is very talented and these comments; on and off the court are affecting him as a player and a person and enough is enough.

  6. I completely believe that O'Neal has gone way too far with his comments on JaVale. Although the purpose of O'Neal's show is to poke fun at professional players and their bloopers, I think that consistently pointing at one player is certainly going too far. As his fellow player and Kerr said, there is a certain point where joking can become serious and O'Neal definitely crossed that line long before this twitter incident. As a professional player everything on and off the court matters to JaVales career, and his reputation can certainly be hurt by having this constant portrayal of him being a poor player. Additionally, I do feel as though the twitter argument and this fiasco as a whole does hurt the teams, players, and NBA's reputation. There is no issue with poking fun, but there's a line to be drawn and not crossed.

  7. Personally, I do not believe O'Neal has gone too far with his comments. Shaq has been paid his entire career to entertain people. He has a show on TNT called 'Shaqtin a fool" which is entirely dedicated to making fun of people. It just so happens that Javale makes a lot of mistakes when playing basketball and appears on Shaq's show where he is made fun of. Javale and his coach, Steve Kerr, should not worry at all about what any reporter is saying. It is the job of the players and coaches to play and coach and not worry about what is being said about it.

  8. I believe Shaq has gone to far with the jokes and banter made at Javale Mcgee. While I understand this is his job, the article stated that he has repeatedly made jokes and remarks about Mcgee being a dumb player. In my opinion if someone asks you to stop doing something for a good reason just like in this situation you stop. I think it boils down to morals and in my opinion the right thing to do here is for Shaq to stop targeting Mcgee and target the hundreds of other basketball players on the court making stupid mistakes.

  9. My person belief is that I feel O'Neal crossed the line with his jokes made towards Javale. Although this is his job, he should have handled this situation differently so it would not cause this much drama. I understand the purpose of O'Neal's show, but just choosing one player to make fun of is definitely not cool. In my opinion I feel that you can only go so far with making a joke to the point where it will eventually hurt that person, this definitley pushed the limit since he handled it very poorly. This can lead to the player feeling insecure and upset do the tweet that was said about him. I think everyone needs to learn to the extend of when a joke becomes not so funny anymore.

  10. To me, Shaquille O'Neal has not crossed the line with the comments are jokes he has made about JaVale McGee. For Shaq, as a retired player and as a host for a show, it is his job to entertain his audience. The point of his show "Shaqtin a fool" is to mess with players in the NBA. Along with his jokes on the show, Shaq and McGee have gotten into a twitter war. Personally, I see this as them just messing around and getting some attention from their fans. Yes, it must be frustrating for McGee to be targeted by Shaq, but he should use this adversity as motivation to play better and to prove Shaq wrong.

  11. I think that Shaq should be allowed to make fun JaVale McGee and whoever he wants. Shaq however, was very childish in the way that he responded to the feud. Although everyone says mean and inappropriate things on twitter, rarely you see it start beef, especailly to the extent to where Shaq's mom had to stop it. Shaq's response just seems like he is trying to discredit McGee somehow and it basically back fired. I do think that Shaq was successful in what I think his goal was. I belive all he was trying to accomplish was bring attention to his show which he definitely did. I know personally and many people like watching bloopers, and it was just unfortunate that most of the bloopers were of McGee. The events that followed this were also unfortunate.

  12. I believe that Shaquille O'Neal has too far in his judgment of McGee. For a player, especially at such a high level, their reputation means everything. Their reputation can make them a loved or hated player. It is important to know that when putting someone down in the media and creating a very negative reputation. For McGee, his training and performance does not get as much attention as the negative descriptions of his life. Although O'Neal's show is all fun and games, it is important to remember that it can have a real impact of McGee's life. It is not fair for him to gain a bad reputation simply for someone else's amusement. O'Neal has gone too far and it is starting to impact McGee's life.

  13. I think that Shaq should be allowed to make fun of JaVale McGee because at the end of the day McGee is a professional athlete and has to be able to deal with people not liking him. As an athlete you are going to have fans and people who don't like you and part of sports, especially at the professional level, you need to learn to ignore it. However, I think that Shaq was wrong in the way he responded to McGee's tweet because McGee is just trying to say that Shaq and his show targets him a little bit too much and that he does not like it. I think that Shaq should have either ignored the tweet or acknowledge the tweet in a way that did not start any problems. I think think McGee was put in a situation where he didn't really have any power over the way Shaq was making fun of him because it gave him no chance of standing up for himself besides the way he did. I think Shaq should be allowed to comment on McGee and his mistakes just like any other commentator but respect his comments and keep it in mind going forward.

  14. I do think Shaquille O'Neal went to far. Obviously, he has the complete right to make fun of JaVale McGee for his repeated hilarious incidences, but it comes to a point where it should stop. JaVale politely asked for him to stop because it is hurting his reputation as a professional basketball player, a job that is heavily influenced by one's reputation. McGee does however have to deal with it because his style of play has a tendency to create goofy moments that are fun to watch, especially when Shaw has a previously established segment about those moments by any player or coach in the NBA. Shaq's tweet response was out of hand and only unnecessarily escalated the interaction, especially when he targeted Durant; he even acknowledged why Durant was sticking up for his teammate. The bottom line is that JaVale has to either deal with the unwanted coverage or change how he plays, and Shaq should know when a bit has gone too far.

  15. In my opinion, I believe Shaq has not gone too far. Quite frankly, I think Javale McGee needs to grow thicker skin. As a professional basketball player, or any celebrity, it is inevitable that you will be criticized and made fun of. So, a short segment pointing out funny plays should not bother McGee. I also believe this segment has the intentions of entertaining Shaq’s audience. Shaq is providing his audience a chance to laugh at some silly plays and moments in the NBA, and McGee should be able to recognize that and even laugh at himself. Shaq has a job to entertain and should continue to. If McGee does not like it, then he should not engage with Shaq on social media because it will only make it worse for himself. McGee needs to understand this is a joke and become more tolerant.

  16. I think that Shaq went too far with what he said. I think that since he is attacking the same player constantly, I think that it could potentially get old quickly and also get personal. I think that since its not even time after time again, but because its been literally years, I think that if Shaq had any respect for him he should probably stop. I think it is rude that Shaq feels zero sympathy for the fact that he is ruining JaVales reputation with people. People have preconceived notions of JaVale because of Shaq's negative talk of him. I don't think that is fair and I think that you can be funny without being mean, and the repetitiveness of attacking the same person is not a way of being funny. I also think that since Shaq wasn't the perfect center that it is not fair to critique another person's play. I think that with the comments made by JaVales teammates and coach about how hard he works, I think that it really shows that Shaq has gone too far.

  18. I believe that Shaq did go too far with his comments towards JaVale McGee. I understand the premise of his show and the point is to make fun of players which is totally understandable, but it goes too far when one person is constantly singled out for their mistakes or errors and made fun of for it. His show is very PG and for some of the shows on comedy central or other networks that really go after people in a much more negative way in terms of vulgarness like shows such as south park or family guy, etc. they still manage to not always focus on one person. They may be more obnoxious and obscene in their actions and it is funny, but to blatantly attack one person consistently seems unreasonable and is something even the most controversial shows don't tend to do. That is why I believe it is unreasonable for Shaq to do what he did. he makes fun of everyone but targets one person more so than others and that to me is unfair.

  19. I think that he has gone too far with what he has said. It was one thing to make a joke once or twice about him, especially considering that is what his company wants him to do, but the fact that he did it repeatedly was just inappropriate. He also went too far in posting tweets talking trash about Javale Mcgee, and other players, which was just unnecessary. His actions were wrong because while he may think it is funny, it is actually damaging to the other players. He went too far by singling out one player, then when he was judged for it, he provided some pretty aggressive, and unnecessary responses. Over all, his actions were very wrong, and he took a joke way too far by damaging a players reputation.

  20. I think that Shaq has gone too far with the things that he said. I understand that it is his job to poke fun at players and that is what his viewers like to see. However, there is a point when it no longer becomes a joke and just becomes harassment. Shaw repeatedly targets Mcgee on his show which I believe to be unneeded. Mcgee was just trying to defend his self with his tweet as anyone would who was trying to defend them self. Shaq then took it too far and insulted Mcgee and seemed to become hostile. Shaq reply comment to the tweet was excessive and just went too far.

  21. I believe Shaq went too far with his judgements. It is unfair to Mcgee to be targeted by Shaq time and time again. The remarks Shaq has been making about Mcgee has specifically targeted him, and seems as unneeded harassment. As professional athletes and adults I think he should act more mature. By posting insults on social media, it allows the whole sports community plus others to precieve Mcgee in a bad way. Shaq is ruining his reputation by doing this, and only giving the people one perspective on this situation. Nobody's perfect, not even Shaq, so for Shaq to make fun of Mcgee for his play is not justified. Overall, this situation is very hostile and has gone way to far.

  22. Honestly, Shaq has crossed a line. His job is to entertain viewers and his viewers may like to see him poke fun at other players, but there is a line between a joke and harassment. As adults in the media, they need to be mature and act appropriately. Children look up to these men and should not be getting the idea in their head that it's okay to make fun of someone else. Shaq clearly singled out McGee multiple times and some people only see McGee and his skills through Shaq's jokes. For professional athletes, their reputation is everything and every comment about them alters people's perception of them. Social media also plays a huge part in this conflict because both men have a lot of Twitter followers and have extreme fans who will stand up for their ideal's comments. Overall, Shaq crossed a line in both general society and in the media/professional athlete world.

  23. I do not believe Shaq has gone too far with his remarks about Javale McGee. The reason I say this is because both Shaq and McGee have responsibilities, with Shaq's being to entertain and McGee's being to perform. Unfortunately for McGee, he has not only failed to perform, but he has also made a joke out of himself. Since Shaq wants to entertain his viewers, it only makes sense that he would put McGee's idiotic mistakes on his segment on a frequent basis. While Shaq's recent segment may have gone a little overboard, McGee needs to understand that this is all fun and games, and needs to act as a professional. Some may argue that Shaq has gone to far because it has happened numerous times over the course of several years, but I believe that they are incorrect because if McGee plays the game he is paid millions of dollars to do at a higher level, none of this would have happened in the first place.
