  1. The youth basketball team from St. Johns catholic school in New Jersey should be allowed to have girls on their team because there are no rules in the league that say whether or not the team may be coed. Also, there are not enough girls in the league to have their own team, so if they are not allowed to play with the boys, they will be deprived of the sport in general. These girls have been playing on the team for years now and it is not fair to suddenly prohibit them from playing. If they have no other alternative of playing on their own team, they need to be allowed to play with the boys. There is no reason why this team should be forced to forfeit the rest of their season because they are coed, but there are no rules that say this is not allowed in the league.

  2. I think that they should not be able to play because of the league rules state that teams can not be coed. However, I think that these rules should be changed to allow them to play if they don't have a girls team available in the town. I think that forfeiting the season was a little bit of an exaggeration, considering it is in the rules to have a team made up of one gender.

  3. The fact that this is even up for discussion is ridiculous, maybe it’s because I’m a female, but I don’t think that someone should take away someone’s physical exercises based on their gender. Odds are those two girls are probably better than half the boys on the team. It is a small town in New Jersey not the NBA, let the girls play. They are 10 years old and most likely playing for fun, as a class we have looked at the pros and cons of playing a youth sport and most of us agreed the pros outweigh the cons. Honestly, teaching these kids how to respect and play with the opposite gender is doing no harm at all, in fact, it’s probably going to help them be more open minded about gender equality in the United States as they get older. The athletic director screwed up by letting the girls play for four years, but his mistake should not be taken out on the girls. The girls should not be punished and therefore should be allowed to play. Also, there is no indication that the opposing teams have a problem with the two girls playing.

  4. I believe that the league that the St. John's Catholic school basketball team plays in should allow girls to play on the boys basketball team. The main reason why I think this is because there is no girls basketball team at the school, so the two girls do not have any other option but to play for the boys team. It was clear from the article that the only person who cared about the girls playing for the boys team was the director in charge of the league. The boys on the team didn't mind, the coach didn't mind and the parents of the players didn't mind. The boys were even willing to be disqualified from league play to continue playing with the girls. However, if St. John's did have a girls team, I would then think that there is no reason why the girls would have to play for the boys team. So, because there is not girls team, the girls should be allowed to play for the boys team. Especially due to the fact that the girls have played for the boys team for 4 years, there is no reason why this should suddenly stop.

  5. I think the St. John's team should be allowed to have girls on the team in this situation. Although the rules imply that only boys are allowed to play, it is unfair to ban girls because the girls do not have enough players to make a team. In addition to that, the girls have been playing on the boys' team for a few years, so it is strange that all of a sudden it is prohibited. The rules should be changed to permit girls to play on the boys' team given that they cannot create a team of their own.

  6. I think that the team should be allowed to have girls play for them. I understand that there is a need to separate genders in sports. Men and Women have different body types and abilities and it makes sense to me to separate the two. However, there is a big difference between 11 year olds playing youth basketball and men and women playing it at a higher level. At that age there is not much point to separate the two. Especially if there is not a team available to the girls to play on. They are young kids and it is a shame to separate them at such a young age. The girls should be allowed to play on this St. John's team.

  7. The St. Johns team should definitely be allowed to have girls on their team. First, there is nowhere in the rules that specifically state girls should not be allowed to play. While the spokesperson says that the rulebook clearly states that only 1 gender is allowed, that rule is not in place for the division in which the St. Johns team plays in. The fact that 10 and 11 year olds have the courage to stand up for what is right is truly amazing. They should continue to protest the ruling of the league because while there is a major difference in competitive sports between males and females, at the age of 10 and 11 there is barely a difference. The league should come to their senses and allow St. Johns to be co-ed.

  8. The St. John's team should 120% be allowed to have girls on their team as there is no legitimate reason for disallowing this. NJ.com found that there is no league rule saying that boys and girls can't compete on the same team even though the archdiocese said there was. Also, even if there was a rule, there weren't enough girls to form their own team. Based on Title IX and basic morals, how can you prevent two ten year-old girls from playing a sport that they want to play. It is a shame that 10 year olds have a higher moral compass than the league that they are playing in. There is no fathomable reason that I can think of that would explain not letting the two girls play.

  9. I feel pretty conflicted about this question, I definitely think the girls should be allowed to finish this season because it is wrong to take it away from them after they have proven that coed teams work. With that said, the reason I feel conflicted is if the teams hadn’t been coed and the girls wanted play with the boys for an upcoming season, I don’t think I would have thought they should. With that said, the article stated that there was no law saying the team cant be coed and the team has been functioning as a coed team. Therefore, I do believe the girls should be allowed to finish the season with the boys because there is nothing other than public opinion to influencing this decision to gender segregate the team.

  10. In my opinion, the St. John's basketball team should be allowed to continue out their season with the girls participating. According to NJ.com, it is not against the rules for the St. John team to be coed, so why should they have to forfeit their season? Why now is this a problem after having 4 years of girls on the roster? I believe they shouldn't have to give up their season due to this gender gap. If there were enough girls interested in the sport, then yes they should have a separate team and it shouldn't be coed. But, as shown in the article, the population of girls interested isn't merely enough to field a team. All in all, this situation is very unfortunate as youth sports are supposed to be played for the pure enjoyment of the game, by doing this it is not allowing young athletes to experience that. There is no reason why these 2 girls should have caused this much of an impact throughout the league, and no reason why they shouldn't be able to play.

  11. I truly believe that the St Johns basketball team should have been allowed to play with 2 females. One reason is the fact that these girls would not have been able to make an all girls basketball team thus forcing them not to be able to play. Secondly, the fight for gender equality has come along way from women never being allowed to vote or work to giving women the right to vote and work. If we were to agree with this situation that these girls should not be allowed to play on an all boys team we are also stating that women should not get equal pay or be allowed to vote.

  12. I believe that the St Johns basketball team should let the two females join the team. There is no rule that specifies girls not being able to play on the men's team, except that, the speaker says the rulebook clearly states that only one female gender is allowed to participate on the team, never says no female's at all. This rule does not go for these girls considering the division that St. Johns plays in is not followed by the rulebook. That being said, the league should definitely allow St. Johns program to be co-ed. Also, the fact that there are 10 and 11 year olds out there that are able to stand up for what they believe and what is right, is very inspirational and hopefully the word gets around that this should be acceptable.

  13. I strongly believe that the St Johns basketball team should allow the two females to join the team. NJ.com stated that there is no rule stating that the girls aren't allowed to play so there should be no reason why they cannot. Another reason is that this is a youth league where kids are just learning the basics of the game. It is not the professionals. This would've been a perfect opportunity to teach the kids about inclusion and teamwork with the opposite gender at a young age. I really do feel that this could have been a very effective opportunity to teach the kids something that just went to waste.

  14. As the article is unclear regarding specific rules the argument can go either way. In the video, it is said that the basketball team is part of a "boys" league. If this is the case in the official rules for the league, then the girls should not be allowed to play. This is not an issue of sexism because if it were the other way around, then the boys should not be able to play either in a "girls" league. If the rules were not clearly stated that the league is boys only, then the girls should definitely be allowed to play. If this is the case, then I do not think that the parents should have any input on weather or not girls should be allowed to play. Because the team had to forfeit due to the two female team members, I take it that the rules state that the team is part of an all boys league, and in this case the girls should not be allowed to play.

  15. I think that with the information provided from the article and the video that the two girls should be allowed to play on the St. Johns team. Since there are no specific rules stated about the league be able to be co-ed or not I think that is one reason why it should be allowed. If there are no stated rules saying otherwise I don't see why there would be an issue. I also think that since they have been doing this for four years that they should also be allowed. One thing that initially popped in my head was perhaps that having girls play with boys could be dangerous for the girls since boys develop differently and tend to be bigger and stronger which could potentially put the girls in a position to get hurt, however, these kids are still so young where they all are really around the same physique anyways and at this point if anything, the girls have matured more than the boys. I understand if danger was one of the reasons for the CYO, but the article and movie did not portray any real reasoning behind why the girls couldn't play with the boys. I think that since all has gone smoothly the past four years they have played wit the boys I don't see why it would be an issue. I think that especially since the girls don't have a team, I think that letting the girls play is just the right thing to do. The girls should be able to have a mixed squad as long as they are comfortable with having to play with and against boys.

  16. The youth basketball team from St. Johns catholic school should be allowed to have been coed based on the uncertainty in the league rules. Because this team has been competing coed for 4 years and the rules weren't enforced is mostly at fault to the athletic director. Unfortunately the uncertainty come in when the rules are not explicitly stated for this specific JV-black league that teams are not allowed to be coed. This team is still playing the same game that everyone else is playing. If the girls voluntarily put themselves in a situation where they are playing in a primarily boys league than that decision should be respected. There should not have been rules made in the first place restricting a girl entrance into a league because she is only a girl. If anything the girls should be able to combine with another school to form a team similar to how the girls hockey team at staples functions. All in all these girls should be allowed to play because the rules are not specifically stated and the league has not made enough of an effort to allow these girls to participate in the activity that they like.

  17. To not allow any girls on the St. John Catholic School basketball team would be disgraceful. The team was playing coed for four years. In my opinion, I do not understand why the league would not allow the girls to play on the team. Also, this is a fifth grade league where the only factor that matters for the players is to have fun. If the league is not giving the girls an opportunity to play basketball, then the league should provide an opportunity for the girls by either converging nearby schools or towns in order to have a complete girls team or adjust the league rules. However, the decision to forfeit the season was correctly made by the team. It is very fascinating that a fifth grade team was able to make such a mature decision regarding their basketball season.

  18. I think that what the basketball team was right. It definitely amazes me that these ten year olds were able to make the decision to forfeit their season on their own and I think that doing this shows how mature they are and how immature the league officials are. The coach described how close the team was and I think that the decision they made was more important than playing basketball itself. I think there should actually be rules put in place and that those rules should allow girls to play in the league.

  19. I think that the girls should not be able to play for the boys team. If it is a boys league, then it should only be for boys to play. Although it sucks that the teams previous record has been erased, they could have expected it. It was a very nice thing for them to give the 2 girls the opportunity to play basketball, but they knew they were bending around the rules. What is even more surprising is that they had been playing coed for 4 years. I personally do not understand why it is not an issue now, but the rules are the rules. I can not imagine what the big deal is integrating 5th grade basketball. Nobody cared that they were playing together except for the league, but the main goal for 5th grade basketball should be to play the sport and have fun. Competitive leagues come in middle school. An alternative that could have avoided this was if the girls should have signed up for a different girls league and played for a different team if they really wanted to play.
